2015-05-06: Walking day Aldenueva del Camino– Calzada de Béjar (22/ 462 km)

Rised early and to care of the now dry cloths. Good planning.
Walked together with John a while. A lot of roadside up to “Baños de Monte Mayor”. The city “Baños” is situated at the end of a valley that is climbing up towards a pass. And Baños, baths, have been found here from the roman days. You found then and find now a health spa with sulphur rich water. A cozy little city with partially steep streets. We took our morning coffee at a coffee shop.
From there we continued and discovered that it was a market day with among other thing clothes for sale at a small square and the streets around it.
John needed a pair of socks. His present had big holes. Got an offer with 3 pair for 5 €. Tried out a pair and they fitted. Then returned the other two to the surprises salesperson. We heard that those that sold things at the market were Romanians, and probably romas judging from the dark color of their skin.
With new socks at Johns feet we continued uphill from the small city along a recently restored part of the roman road. Was this what Vía de la Plata looked like during the Roman times? Probably. Really thrilling that it had got back its old surface, at least for this part.
At the end of the uphill we passed the border towards Castilla-Leon and then left Extremadura. The pass was at 880 m according to a sign. But it was not much of a pass more of a threshold to a higher land. Then into the valley “Cuerpo del Hombre” (The Body of Man). Beautiful! Almost as at home a summers day, but more rich in flowers and birds.
The day ended in the small village of “Calzade de Bejar”. Very small in fact. Albergue, no shop, one bar. Nice but dying like so many Spanish small villages. Mostly elderly people left.
Those staying at the albergue were now just old acquaintances. Lunch at the bar and dinner at the albergue.
