2015-04-29: Walking day Torremejía – Mérida – Aljucén (33/ 240 km)

After breakfast at the same bar as dinner the night before I continued along roads and paths finally down towards the river in “Mérida”. The last part after a road machine, a Volvo that plowed the road surface!!!
Succeeded in passing that and went over the fine old roman bridge across the river to “Mérida”. In “Merida” or as the romans said “Emerita Augusta” there is really a lot to see. However I had made up my mind to continue a bit more that day to avoid too long stretches per day later.
At the end of the bridge I met the Frenchman from yesterday’s “Torremejiia”. But he was more in a hurry than me. So while I stopped to eat he continued. Passing to the west of the city center the fantastic roman aqueduct appeared. Continued onwards to the hills north of the city.
I arrived at the old roman dam “Poserpina”. “Poserpina” was used to support the roman aqueduct with drinking water. The aqueduct starts here.  Very beautiful and good engineering. The romans knew what they were doing.
The landscape now became more barren and covered by forest. But a forest not like Swedish forests. I did pass a village where one was building a new albergue.
A while after that I arrived to “Aljucén”. Had to ask for direction to the albergue up the hill. As usual shower, wash and then registration. The hospitalero had arrived.
Had dinner at the bar down the hill. Talked to two old dentists (actually I think they held a higher position) from Cambridge but of Scottish origin. They were filled with curiosity and intelligence
