A
good breakfast. We walked back towards Vía de la Plata on the small local road
that I had found on map of my GPS. A good choice that was the shortest way back
to the camino.
Out on Vía de la Plata again it was not far to the famous roman city of “Cáparra”
with its famous triumphal arch that the camino passes straight through. Today
the city is only ruins and excavations, but once it was an important city that
was required for the roman road to function in this sparsely populated area. So
the romans founded if for strategic and communication reasons.
That would be
needed even today that someone thought in the same way for the modern pilgrims
that is walking the same road. May I suggest an albergue next to “Cáparra”!
When passing “Capárra” today it was totally deserted and the excavations non-existent.
Why? If one is allowed to guess it is
for economic reasons. Spain is passing through difficult times.
The camino goes on through beautiful surroundings. Eventually it crosses the
motorway. There was a deep ford that should be avoi
ded.
The last portion of the
camino towards “Aldenueva” goes a bit back and forth through the countryside.
Having arrived to the albergue the hospitalera arrived after a while. Was I the
first one? Yes! But after a while several known faces arrived. I worked on my
own for a couple of hours. The I went out and had dinner with John and the
biking girl from South Africa. Have I told you about her? She had started
biking the camino together with her father in his eighties. But he had had to
give up and gone to a son in Hungary, while she continued on her mountain bike.
They had agreed to meet in “Santiago” when she got there.
Several of the others
showed up at the same restaurant. Then back to the albergue via the ATM. Time
to say good night. The room was full and the washed cloths are drying. What is
missing?
